2023 Holy Monday “

Matthew 21:18-22

JESUS CURSES A FIG TREE

18 Early in the morning, as Jesus was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. 19 Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately the tree withered. 20 When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?” they asked.21 Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done. 22 If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”

Building upon 40 Days of Devotion we begin Holy Week. After 40 days of sacrifice, and repentance we are now faced with the prospect of an even more difficult task. Some might say we come out of the frying pan and jumped right into the skillet. Yesterday we had a moment to exhale, to celebrate. Palm Sunday reminded us that every now and then people get it right. Jesus enters humbly into Jerusalem but he is welcomed like the King he is. The people greet him with shouts of save us and blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD. For just a moment it seems like things are going to get better. Still Jesus did not get caught up in the hype. Instead of relying on the emotions of the people to dictate his future actions, Jesus continue his pursuit to the cross. Jesus chooses the Hope of eternity over the hype of humanity.

Our text begins the next morning. After the hoopla of yesterday Jesus is on his way back to the city and sees a fig tree. Upon seeing the tree there is the expectation there would be figs on the tree. Jesus is hungry and is anticipating a breakfast of figs and fellowship. What he finds is an empty tree. Looks good but producing nothing. How often are we like this fig tree. We look good on the outside, we have our bibles, and we have memorized some key verses. We know “church talk” and can be seen in some of the “right” places. But upon closer inspection, we are full of sound and fury signifying nothing. There is no substance to us. Far too often we focus on our shell and neglect our soul. Jesus expects fruit and finds fakery. He then utters what I sense to be a scary utterance. Jesus says “may you never bear fruit again”. Wow and owww. The first law GOD gave creation was be fruitful and multiple. For Jesus to say be no more fruitful is to take away its purpose. Immediately the tree withers. Life without purpose is death. When I read this I can imagine what it would be like if all hope were gone. Even further when I read this I sense Jesus challenging us on being true to fulfilling our purpose. We are called to do more than look good and talk the talk. When we are fig trees in a world that is hungry, we are intended to bear fruit. Not just leaves, but fruit.

Jesus challenges us on bearing fruit and also uses this experience as a teaching moment for the disciples. Jesus replied to the disciples amazement by saying, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done. 22 If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.” When we pray we are exposed to an unlimited supply of power. Jesus helps us to unlock a treasure of incalculable value. Faith without doubt. The power is not in the praise of people but in the presence of GOD.

Today I am encouraged to be intentional about bearing fruit. The hype of should should not dictate the life we live. Beyond the hype, the work for the kingdom must still be done. Do not grow weary in well doing for in due season we shall reap a harvest i we faint not. #livebig

POint to Ponder: How will You choose hope over hype? Who have you hyped up only to find they disappointed you? Would you rather be loved for people pleasing  or respected for telling it like it is?

Lent 2020 Day 2 “Cleaning Up”

Scriptures for Today February 27, 2020   https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm%2051;%20Jonah%203:1-10;%20Romans%201:1-7

Psalm 51

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity
    and cleanse me from my sin.

For I know my transgressions,
    and my sin is always before me.
Against you, you only, have I sinned
    and done what is evil in your sight;
so you are right in your verdict
    and justified when you judge.
Surely I was sinful at birth,
    sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;
    you taught me wisdom in that secret place.

Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
    wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
Let me hear joy and gladness;
    let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
Hide your face from my sins
    and blot out all my iniquity.

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God,
    and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me from your presence
    or take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation
    and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
    so that sinners will turn back to you.
14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God,
    you who are God my Savior,
    and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.
15 Open my lips, Lord,
    and my mouth will declare your praise.
16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
    you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
17 My sacrifice, O God, is[b] a broken spirit;
    a broken and contrite heart
    you, God, will not despise.

18 May it please you to prosper Zion,
    to build up the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous,
    in burnt offerings offered whole;
    then bulls will be offered on your altar.

Jonah 3 New International Version (NIV)

Jonah Goes to Nineveh

Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time: “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.”

Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it. Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the city, proclaiming, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.” The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.

When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh:

“By the decree of the king and his nobles:

Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.”

10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.

Romans 1:1-7 New International Version (NIV)

Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God— the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life[a] was a descendant of David, and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power[b] by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from[c] faith for his name’s sake. And you also are among those Gentiles who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.

To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be his holy people:

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

Holy Week Tuesday: Living to Die, Dying to Live

        Tuesday of Holy Week Its A Good Day To Die

Death is life’s common denominator. At some point in the life of every living creature, death comes. Instinctively all life forms pursue what it takes to perpetuate life until the moment the pursuit of life ends. In essence life ends in pursuit of life. This being said, it sounds peculiar to hear that this is a good day to die. Why would anyone say that or believe that? We tend to run from death, so how is it possible to be a good day to die? Jesus gives us a response to this query.

In our text, recorded in the Gospel of John 12 we find Jesus in the last week of his earthly ministry. He has arrived in Jerusalem to a crowd and this crowd continue to gather around him. Yesterday we said “Don’t believe the hype”. Even though crowds may gather people are fickle and the mood of a crowd can change like the weather. I mean, snow in April??? Knowing this Jesus senses a mood shift in the atmosphere and knows the praises of men and women are Not a foundation to build upon. Jesus responds to an inquiry of his presence by Greeks in the crowd by saying, “24 Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25 Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

Reading these words knowing the end of the story makes it difficult to imagine how the disciples must have heard them. My sense is they heard Jesus in essence say “it’s a good day to die.” It is clear that Jesus sees that life has no meaning when all one is doing is avoiding death. Jesus begins to unlock a door in the hearts and minds of people that had long been a fear inducing mystery. Death! nobody likes talking about or even hearing about it, yet the Master Jesus uses nature to teach, There can be no forest or fruit unless a seed is willing to sacrifice it’s life. As long as a seed holds on to it’s “seedness”, it misses its life giving purpose. Inside the seed is life. This life however cannot be experienced without the death of what has been familiar. As long as we stick to the familiar spaces of our comfort zones, there may be no new life coming from us. As long as we fight for the status quo we ultimately refuse to live. Jesus challenges us by giving us a broader vision of life. Jesus offers eternal life to those who value the Spirit over the flesh. Those who love their life in this world which is temporary will lose it. Those who hate their life in this world will gain eternity. It’s a good day to die. It’s a good day to die to the pursuit of this worlds delusive dreams. It’s a good day to die to selfishness. It’s a good day to die to petty arguments and foolish pride. It’s a good day to die to greed and fear. It’s a good day to die to any ideas of scarcity when we deal with a GOD of abundance.

This week reminds us as we follow the steps of Jesus that Death is not to be feared as an ending but embraced as a new beginning. I encourage you to no longer be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. If anyone be in Christ they are a new creature. If you want to live you must die. #livebig

PRAYER: LORD, teach us to value your presence, more than your presents. Enable us to die to the things that compromise your glory from shining through. We surrender as our big brother Jeshua did, aware of the risk, help us to say yes to your will. AMEN

Point to Ponder: What death needs to occur in your life in order for you to be fully alive? How often have you gone through the motions of your faith journey, devoid of passion and vitality? Do you have the courage to say, “Not my will, but thy will be done”?

Lent Day 39: Reclaiming Our Songs Of Joy

wallpaper, sadness, bird, various, wallpapers

By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept
    when we remembered Zion.
There on the poplars
    we hung our harps,
for there our captors asked us for songs,
    our tormentors demanded songs of joy;
    they said, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm+137&version=NIV

Where have we hung our harps? Trials and tribulations can take their collective toll on a people and soon they begin to forget who and whose they are. After enough pain it can appear that prayer is simply wishful thinking wrapped in an illusion of possibility somewhat like Santa Clause. When this begins to happen we may tend to forget or over-remember. When  i say over-remember I am saying we can often glorify the past in such a way that it is altered. Today as we near the end of our 40 days of Lenten praise, I challenge us to reclaim our songs of joy no matter what our situation.

Through these 40 days we have explored different facets of ourselves and of our GOD. We recognize the high level of commitment to consistency in service that GOD desires. We have challenged ourselves to be stronger and more resilient in the face of internal and external pressures. Today knowing that soon we will be eating whatever we want and freeing up some more time listen to your heart. Where is there a song of joy in your heart? A song that situations can’t take from you. A song that adds meaning to your misery. The senior saints of my childhood would sing, this joy that I have the world didn’t give it to me and the world can’t take it away.

The Psalmist shares the predicament the Israelite community faced. Being in exile and often on the run they hung up their harps. The left their music makers behind. In other words they cried and gave in to the full expression of their depression. It can happen to the best of us. We get to thinking and forget to remember the powerful presence of our loving Divine Daddy. We can get into the woe is me and I can’t sing because there’s nothing to sing about. If you are here let me suggest you sing on credit. Sing not because of your situation but in spite of it. Sing because you know trouble don’t last always. Sing because over your head you hear the songs of the birds who sing even when they are caged. Sing because you know there is a GOD somewhere. Sing on credit, for in due season you will reap a harvest if you faint not.

PRAYER: LORD return to us the joy of our salvation we have so carelessly lost. In the midst of our pain erase our shame, and help us find our way back to you. Fix us where we are broken and heal us where we are hurting. continue to change our mourning into dancing we pray, AMEN

Point to Ponder: Write a song of defiant praise that you will sing in your most trying time.

Lent Day 34: A Rock and Refuge

PSALM 31:1-5 In you, Lord, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame;
    deliver me in your righteousness. Turn your ear to me,
    come quickly to my rescue; be my rock of refuge,
    a strong fortress to save me. Since you are my rock and my fortress,
    for the sake of your name lead and guide me.Keep me free from the trap that is set for me, for you are my refuge. Into your hands I commit my spirit; deliver me, Lord, my faithful God.

Have you ever felt like everything in your life is changing beyond recognition? Has it ever felt like your world was spinning in circles and there was no way to slow it down? In the fast paced race called life, especially in the Western world, there is a need for stability. Everybody needs something and somewhere they can feel safe. The writer of our Psalm addresses the emotion associated with longing to be safe. The writer is looking for a safe place.

Lets look deeper at Psalm 31.

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm+31&version=NIV

The Psalmist writes, “In you LORD, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame.” In other words, the writer is saying, LORD I have come to you for help, please don’t let me down. There comes a time when a person has been through a series of trials and tragedies that they can begin to ascribe to GOD the same characteristics they would to their friends and enemies. We can sadly become conditioned by a constant barrage of brokenness that causes us to even doubt the things we believe in. When the writer exclaims, “Let me not be put to shame”, there is a sense that he is not certain he will be safe, even with GOD. In the next verse we see him write, Come quickly to my rescue, Be my rock. We see the urgency in his plea.

I dare say we too like the Psalmist are looking for a safe place in GOD. At times it seems this need becomes even more pressing. We have worn ourselves out trying to save ourselves and we come to GOD as a last resort. I am glad GOD is faithful. I have found that it is not until we let go of control that we get any stability in our lives. Vs. 5 says, “Into your hands I commit my spirit.” These words were the last words attributed to Jeshua on the cross. Seeing them here lets us know how deeply ingrained scripture was in the ethos of Jeshua. When we utter these words we are opening up to ourselves unlimited possibilities for resurrection. Until we die we cannot truly live. It is in the giving of our life to GOD that we gain our life. GOD is faithful and will be our rock in a weary land. No matter what we may face, GOD is our rock and refuge.

PRAYER: Into your hands we commit our spirit. We do so confident of your ability to provide and protect, but cautious because of our own weaknesses. Where we are weak, make us strong, and where we are too strong make us weak. Guide is in the paths of your truth and righteousness all the days of our life.

Point To Ponder: How difficult is it for you to totally commit your spirit to the hands of GOD? How has GOD been your rock and refuge?

Lent Day 29: Keeping Good Company

Image result for nature standing alone

PSALM 101:3 -6 I hate what faithless people do;
    I will have no part in it. The perverse of heart shall be far from me;
    I will have nothing to do with what is evil. Whoever slanders their neighbor in secret,    I will put to silence; whoever has haughty eyes and a proud heart, I will not tolerate.My eyes will be on the faithful in the land, that they may dwell with me; the one whose walk is blameless will minister to me.

Birds of a feather flock together. I have heard this statement my entire life. On the surface it makes good sense. Why wouldn’t geese be with geese and eagles be with eagles? It makes sense. However No person is an island and no person can stand alone. Humanity was created for community. While we are all human, we must distinguish how we will allow ourselves to be influenced by the company that we keep. What I am driving at is the people and places that we interact with operate in an intricate balance between influencing and being influenced. When we don’t pay attention to the company that we keep we may find ourselves manifesting behaviors inconsistent with our core. An example of this can be seen in mob generated behavior. Many people of normally reserved emotions and good character can find themselves in a mob and all of a sudden get carried away and before they know it they are shouting crucify him.

The Psalmist in Psalm 101

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=psalm+101&version=NIV

speaks of being careful to live a blameless life. Needless to say this is a tall order. The only possible way I can imagine living a blameless life is to be careful and rely on help from GOD. Jeshua the Christ taught the disciples to pray “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” Evil is all around us and without proper spiritual disciplines it will rub off on  us. One will not remain blameless by luck. This being said we must be careful not to miss the fact that we are all made in the image of the Divine creator. Jeshua was criticized for the company he kept because he believed it was not the well that needed the doctor but the sick. Jeshua kept a balance between who he was called to be and the people he was called to save. As it was with Jeshua so I believe it should be with us. We are called to be a light that shines. Like a flashlight, we cannot shine continuously without changing or charging our batteries. Lent is such a time. During this season we recharge our batteries through spiritual nurturing so that we can handle the constant contact being in the world and not of the world may bring.

As you go and grow through this day, I encourage you to recharge your spiritual battery. In that same way, share love with all you meet, regardless of their response. Maintain the balance between hating sin and loving the sinner.

PRAYER: DIVINE CREATOR, may your kingdom come and your will be done through us today. May the nourishment from our daily bread empower us to glorify you in word and in deed. Forgive us for getting off track so easily and becoming overly influenced by the world as it is and not as you desire it to be. AMEN

Point to Ponder: Who has influenced your life the most? What is your plan to live a blameless life? Remember failure to plan is a plan to fail.

Lent Day 27: Love Stands Firm

Image result for love stands firm

PSALM 89:1-2 I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever;
    with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known
    through all generations.
I will declare that your love stands firm forever,
    that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.

We live in a time where many people and situations are unpredictable. Marriages that start in so much love end in divorce over half of the time. There appears to be no sense of commitment and loyalty anymore. Many of our foundations are shaky, often built on our on temporary emotions. When many of us say forever we often mean, “Forever as long as things are going my way”.

The Psalmist in Psalm 89 begins with a powerful declaration.

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm+89&version=NIV

The Psalmist declares, I will song of the LORDS great Love forever. Have you ever been in love? The kind of love that makes your heart sing. The love that makes eternity seem like a moment and a moment seem like eternity? The kind of love that you believe will never end? In that same vein, Have you ever had a broken heart? Has a great love of yours ever been silenced by death or divorce? When we make a declaration about love we must acknowledge the difficulty in distinguishing emotion from devotion. When our love is built on emotion it is like a thermometer. The mercury goes up and down based on external conditions. When love is based on devotion it is like a thermostat. A thermostat sets the temperature. The distinction is major.

When the Psalmist speaks of singing of the love of the LORD forever he is speaking of a thermostat kind of love. When GOD loves us it is not based on who we are or what we do. GOD loves us forever and unconditionally. We must not however mistake unconditional love for no consequences for disobedience. The scripture is clear that, “Those whom I love I rebuke and chasten.” (Revelations 3:19) The challenge for us as children of GOD is to maintain devotional love amid divine rebuke. Like children when we are being punished we can wonder, “Does mom or dad love me anymore”? We feel unprotected and vulnerable. In cases like this I encourage us to keep singing because GODS love stands firm. The Love of GOD is not about who we are to GOD but who GOD is to us. GOD is love. For GOD to stop loving us GOD would have to cease to be who GOD is and I dare say we are not that important.

Today, I encourage us to be the good thing that happens to those around us. For at least one somebody make GODS faithfulness known, not just through your words but through your attention and through your actions. People will not care how much we know until they know how much we care.

PRAYER: LORD teach us to love like you love. Forgive us for all doubts and delays in our responsiveness to your calls upon us. Help is to be more faithful and focused on manifesting your glory. AMEN

Point to Ponder: Share an experience you have had with GODS love. Post in the comment section your favorite love song and how the meaning would change if you made GOD the object of the song. For me one song would be :”Always and Forever, each moment with GOD is just like a dream to me that somehow came true”.

Lent Day 11: Overthinking

Image result for overthinking

Psalm 55:1-3 Listen to my prayer, O God,
    do not ignore my plea;hear me and answer me.
My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught
    because of what my enemy is saying,
    because of the threats of the wicked;
for they bring down suffering on me
    and assail me in their anger.

Have you ever allowed thoughts about what someone is saying or has said about you, to get to you? Have you ever been sitting around and suddenly your mind became fixated on some mess that someone spoke into the atmosphere? Have you ever become distraught over the threats of mean spirited people, intent on destroying dreams and downsizing destinies? Many people in our world today live in fear of the not yet. They take the negative threats and iterations of others and instead of watching it unfold, they act like the not yet has already been.

The Psalmist in our text today is going through this same feeling. The writer is crying out to GOD, Listen to my prayer and do not ignore my plea. My thoughts trouble me. My thoughts trouble me. Have  you ever been troubled by your thoughts? Its a bad feeling because no matter where you go or what you do you carry your mind with you. When you “lose your mind” many people consider this to be a bad thing. Yet I hear the writer in Romans 12:1 saying, “Be transformed, by the renewing of your mind”, and in another place in Philippians 2, “Let this mind be in you that was also in Christ Jesus”.

During this Lenten season, its not a bad idea to look at the effects our thoughts are having on us. When we examine the effects of our thoughts on our lives, we too like the Psalmist may need to cry out for help. How many times have we been guilty of shrinking due to overthinking? How many F.E.A.R.s (False Expectations Appearing Real) have we allowed to control our efforts. How many dreams have we stored away because somebody else said it couldn’t be done? Like the Psalmist we may wish we had wings of a dove so we could fly away and flee into a safe place. We may wish we could escape. But no matter where you go you are there. Instead of running or projecting our negative thoughts onto a yet to be time, let us embrace the thought that it is always now.

When we embrace the power of now, and choose to live within it, we find peace. The LORD our GOD is always with us. The words of others must never be taken personally. Whatever people say about us has more to do with them than it does with us. Take nothing personally. Good or bad that others say. Our minds are powerful and GOD has granted us the opportunity to channel our thoughts. We may not control every thought that comes to us, nor can we control what someone else says, but we can always control our responses. Today, cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.

Lent Day 10: All In

Deuteronomy 10:12-14 And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lordyour God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, 13 and to observe the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?

Hebrews 4:12-13 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Day 10 of Lent I am lead through reading the texts for today to ask myself, “to whom or to what, have I given my whole heart and soul?” I ask myself knowing how many times I have said. “LORD I love you with all my heart mind and soul”. I know how often I have believed myself when I said it. But now in the midst of these 40 days of consecration and meditation, I am wondering, “Have I really given my full attention and heart to GOD?” It is easy to say “YES”, however if I am able to give more attention to GOD now during Lent,  does that mean I was withholding something before? If there is more of me to give, then what and why was I holding back?

I will take the risk and say I am not alone. Many people I know live most of their life keeping something in reserve. We live and interact with many, but who gets our whole heart? My sense is we have trust issues. We give full effort in spurts like when we are desperate and have nowhere else to turn. During our most intense awareness of lack, we cry out with full intensity, LORD have mercy on me. In Psalm 51, the Psalmist cries out for mercy and says “purge me with hyssop”. That’s pretty intense. When we are ill, when we know we need a blessing we can get real serious with Yahweh, and yet when we get through what we were praying through, is our praise as intense as our prayer request? In most cases there maybe a gap.

The text in Deuteronomy 10:12-22 drives us into our meditation.

What does the desire of us? The answer comes back, fear, obedience, and  love and service. To fear the LORD is to respect the power and presence of GOD in every situation. If you have ever been scared think about your response. Whatever you fear controls you. As a child growing up in Chicago, I was forced to be alert and aware of my surroundings at all times. Failure to recognize the potential for danger could be fatal. Being aware meant locking doors and keeping my head on a swivel. In that same way to fear the LORD is to respect GOD. It is to be alert to opportunities to be a blessing, for we do not always know when GOD will reveal GODSELF in an unfamiliar way. Secondly we are asked to be obedient to GOD. The Israelites as we have said in the last few days were entering in to the promised land and before they went in, GOD led Moses to give them a pep talk. Reminding them of the new responsibilities that came along with freedom. If they followed the commands and were obedient, things would go well with them. So it is with us. If we are obedient to GOD we will find things going better in our lives.

From here the text lifts what Jeshua considers the central message of all the laws of all the prophets which is to love and serve the LORD our GOD with ALL our heart and soul. GOD does not desire our leftovers. When we give GOD our all we live in a perpetual state of not my will but thy will be done. Loving GOD with all our heart and soul means we trust GOD with every aspect of our being. It means we can be honest with GOD how we may be feeling from day to day. GOD has think skin and already knows when we are nodding yes while our mind is wandering. Being an active listener with GOD and not just an active talker is a sign of our love and service.

Today I say lets go All in. This term has been made popular in a poker game called Texas Hold Em. When one goes all in they bet all their money. If they win they win big, but if they lose they are through. Left with nothing but a memory. Let’s go all in with GOD today. Hold nothing back. GOD knows our heart and nothing can be hidden from GOD. It may be risky but the reward is DIVINE.

Prayer: LORD forgive me for allowing the illusion of giving my all to take the place of actually doing it. You have helped me and proven your love for me in more ways than I have acknowledged. I commit to moving beyond lip talk into life walk. I commit to respecting you, following you, and loving you with uncompromising service. AMEN

Daily Application: Today write a love letter to GOD.

Lent Day 8: Know Your Idols

Deuteronomy 9:21 Also I took that sinful thing of yours, the calf you had made, and burned it in the fire. Then I crushed it and ground it to powder as fine as dust and threw the dust into a stream that flowed down the mountain.

Disappointment is real. Everyone at some time or another will have to deal with life when something happens that causes them to be disappointed. It may be a child that disappoints you. After all you did changing diapers, sitting up late night while they coughed, baseball, basketball, track meets and soccer games , and now they tell you after one semester in college just how wrong you were. Disappointment. You put your hope and trust in someone, they seemed so nice and polite and then they drop an emotional bomb on you or act highly inappropriately, Disappointment. You study hard for a test you need to pass, only to see a “F” or a “D”. Disappointment. Of all the disappointments in this life I don’t think there is a disappointment greater than having an expectation of GOD that isn’t met.

When we feel GOD has disappointed us, when we go through a season when our prayers seem to go no further than the room we are in, when sickness and pain are an ever present reminder that GOD has not answered our prayer for healing, when these and countless other things happen, what do we do? How do we navigate the minefield of broken dreams and dreams deferred? Some of us, I dare say most of us look for the quick fix. It is easier to find something, anything that feels good and familiar, than it is to wrestle with our situation until we recognize GOD is an ever present help in our time of trouble, even when it doesn’t feel like it.

Our challenge today is to recognize the idols in our life. When I reference idols I am referencing those things that take the place of GOD. I am not simply referencing the obvious golden calves in life, like alcohol or sex, and food. I am challenged today to even think how it may be possible to make an idol out of the Bible and other faith practices. I sense at times that we engage in an act of “bibliolitry”. By this I mean we pick and choose aspects of scripture that make us feel good and limit ourselves to those texts. We look to the given (Bible) and not the giver (GOD). As such our understandings remain static, comfortable, and in some ways devoid of their power. GOD is dynamic. The word of GOD is described as the “Living Word”. If the word is living how does our interpretation of it remain static? We are challenged each time we encounter scripture to dig deeper and ask GOD, “what are you saying to me today”? We run a risk when we assume a meaning and become spiritually lazy. This laziness leads to idols which remain static. The golden claf had no life and could give no life, but it made the people feel better.

As you go and grow through this season of Lent I invite you to examine your life and rid yourself of any idols.

Prayer: Creator GOD, forgive us for our idols. We realize that we have become distracted by disappointment and chosen ways to self soothe that are not in line with your intent for our lives. We apologize for making golden calves to take you place. Help us through our Lenten disciplines to increase our faith in the midst of our failure. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Through the intercession of the Holy Spirit, in the name of Jeshua we pray, AMEN

Application for today: Read Psalm 23:1 nine times placing emphasis on a different word each time. Call a loved one and say Happy Wednesday, see how they respond.
